Many Public Crevice Gardens in North America and Europe were constructed by the hands of Zdenek Zvolanek. He also taught Paul Spriggs and Kenton Seth, who went on to build others both in NA and Australia. Jeremy Schmidt took on recycled paving materials in the style of Utrecht Botanic Garden, to create a North Carolina garden.
Montreal Crevice Garden
In 2002 Joseph Halda, in conjunction with the Quebec Alpine and Rock Garden Society, designed the "Jardin de crevasses" as the first installation of a crevice garden in a Quebec public garden. Now near the main entrance there is a small corner where an outcrop is stratified at 60°. They wanted more.
Public Crevice Gardens have progressed since this 1968 installation of tufa and slate crevices in slides and walls in BRNO, CZ, at the Botanic Garden/Arboretum of Mendelově University. The garden architect Ivar Otruba based his style on natural features: mountainsides and prairies. The rock garden curator, Josef Holzbecher, used metal, concrete, stone and wood to create natural looking plant habitats in the garden.
The crevice garden was installed by Kenton Seth.
Our version of the Czech alpine garden style mimicking natural stone uplift-formed crevices, was constructed with recycled material, known as urbanite. Broken concrete driveway slabs and foundation pieces were quarried onsite, and the crevices were filled with a pea gravel-like concrete block waste byproduct, PermaTill®. These soilless crevices provide a narrow but deep root run, and offer near perfect drainage and a pH above 8.0.
The Memorial University of Newfoundland Botanical Garden is operated by Memorial University of Newfoundland in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located on Mount Scio Road in the suburbs of St. John's, and was founded in 1971 under the supervision of Dr. Bernard Jackson.
